Catio types
A portable catio is a movable enclosure for supervised outdoor time or indoor separation. Options include pop-up screen tents, take-apart frame-and-netting enclosures, and catios on caster wheels; choose by your cat’s behavior, the available space, and how often you need to move it.
Checked: Oct 2026
Portable does not always mean pop-up. Cats Safe at Home describes portable catios as structures you can transport between locations or use without affecting the property. That makes them worth considering if you rent or cannot commit to a permanent enclosure.
A pop-up catio is a screen tent, such as the SansBug. A collapsible catio may instead have a frame and netting that you take apart: Catnets’ Premium range uses removable attachments rather than cable ties. If you want folding panels specifically, check the listing; these facts do not identify a folding-panel model.
A catio on wheels is a different proposition. Habitat Haven describes portable enclosures with removable frames, caster wheels, and shelving, intended for frequent moves or separating cats. Rolling an enclosure around your home is not the same as packing a tent for travel.
Prices were checked in October 2026; confirm current stock and pricing before ordering. Catnets offers Classic and Premium frame-and-netting enclosures. Its comparison specifies steel frames and ¾″ stainless steel reinforced, UV-treated cat netting.
Catnets lists single-size enclosures at 5′10″ wide, high, and long; the double size is 5′10″ wide and high by 11′8″ long. The listed 8′2″ Mid-Size name is not a complete set of dimensions, so check its listing for the full footprint.
SansBug presents its screen tent as a pop-up option for calm cats that do not shred materials. It has a solid, waterproof tarp floor, but the supplied facts give no price or dimensions. Habitat Haven’s wheeled-enclosure page describes made-to-order models, although that collection displays no products; ask about availability rather than assuming you can order one.

For a yard, patio, or porch, start with the surface and footprint. Catnets makes correct assembly on a flat, stable surface a condition of secure use and describes its enclosures as movable between porches, balconies, and backyards. Its comparison lists smaller models for balconies, small patios, and travel.
On a balcony, an enclosure does not also enclose the surrounding railings and gaps. Catnets recommends its separate balcony netting kit for full balcony coverage. Measure the usable space before choosing, rather than relying on the word portable.
For an RV or campsite, transport and setup are separate questions. Habitat Haven says its portable enclosure can slide into an RV or trailer, and recommends team-lifting when loading into a trailer or truck bed. That transport claim does not establish suitability for every campsite or travel arrangement.
Indoors, Habitat Haven’s portable enclosures can provide separation; its double-decker design has separate rooms. SansBug suggests its tent for home renovations or hotel stays and says it can hold a bed, water, toys, and litter box. For frequent packing, compare the attachment method and storage requirements before buying.
Treat outdoor time as supervised, especially with a screen tent. SansBug explicitly calls for supervision and warns that sharp claws can tear its netting. Its tent is not a suitable choice for a cat that shreds materials; the supplied facts do not establish chew resistance.
Do not treat cat netting as a predator barrier. Catnets says its netting is designed for cats only and excludes damage caused by dogs, coyotes, or other animals inside or outside the enclosure. A seller’s containment description is not proof that an enclosure can withstand an animal approaching it.
The supplied listings do not establish wind limits or ground-stake requirements. Check the model’s instructions before placing it in an exposed yard or campsite; wheels, portability, and a flat surface alone do not answer anchoring questions. Avoid choosing a model whose placement requirements you cannot meet.
Sun and heat protection also need a separate check. Catnets sells a shade sail, but UV-treated netting does not establish a safe temperature inside the enclosure. Consider a fixed catio instead if you want a permanent outdoor structure rather than repeated setup; still assess its materials, siting, and containment rather than assuming fixed means safer.
Suitability depends on the cat and the material. SansBug recommends its screen tent for calm cats that do not shred, warns that sharp claws can tear the netting, and calls for supervised outdoor use.
Catnets’ Premium range uses a bottom PVC sleeve and Velcro attachments, allowing repeated takedown without cable ties. Its Classic range uses cable ties around the bottom, so compare assembly methods if you plan to pack it frequently.
Habitat Haven says its portable enclosure can slide into an RV or trailer for travel. It recommends team-lifting for loading into a trailer or truck bed; check dimensions and current availability before planning around it.
Catnets says its portable catios require no drilling, screws, or permanent fixtures. Cats Safe at Home also identifies portable structures as an option that does not affect the property, though you should check your building or association’s requirements.
