Height gives your cat places to climb, perch and look out. Habitat Haven describes its shelves as places to stretch and watch the surroundings, while The Catio Company offers suspension bridges as aerial routes through an enclosure.

Choose connected routes rather than treating each shelf as an isolated destination. Cat Topia recommends connected shelving or ramps for cats needing more support, and The Catio Company places steps, ramps and scratching posts to support movement and accessibility. A layout that depends on jumping is not the same choice as a connected ramp route.

The kennel store lists tunnels, ramps, stairs and bridges at 8″ wide and 12″ tall, in 4′, 6′ and 8′ lengths. Its separate outdoor ramp listing measures 8″ x 12″ x 96″. The seller says shelves are spaced for jumping but gives no measured gap in the supplied information, so ask for the actual spacing before choosing a layout.

Plan resting furniture alongside the climbing route. Habitat Haven recommends an awning over the catio for shade and describes its hammock as waterproof and suitable for sleeping. It offers fabric awnings for several enclosure types, including window enclosures and tunnels.

The Catio Company makes outdoor hammocks from weather-resistant materials and says a hammock is included in every custom enclosure it builds. Its hiding boxes can have openings on different sides, custom shapes or bubble domes. Boxes can also be stacked into an exploration layout.

For a bed-like perch, The Catio Company typically installs an acrylic bubble dome on a large corner shelf. It suggests a cushion, toys or treats inside to encourage exploration. Ask how much shelf space the dome needs; the supplied information does not give its dimensions.

Scratching furniture can also form part of the climbing route. The Catio Company wraps custom posts in synthetic manila rope and can add platforms that connect with ramps and perches. Its rope-wrapped scratching ramps serve as both scratching surfaces and climbing routes.

For a simpler surface, Cat Topia offers outdoor-carpet shelving that cats can scratch. The kennel store also describes its carpeted shelves as resting and scratching surfaces. If you want a dedicated upright scratcher rather than carpeted shelving, compare the post options separately.

The supplied sources do not specify litter boxes, water bowls, fountains or their placement inside a catio. They also do not establish whether those items are included with an enclosure. Outdoor materials and frame attachments

Look for materials explicitly described for outdoor use, not just furniture that fits inside the enclosure. The Catio Company describes its accessories as exterior-grade and easy to clean, and recommends weather-resistant outdoor-grade carpet that can be replaced. Cat Topia says outdoor carpet adds comfort and reduces heat on sun-warmed shelves.

Cat Topia constructs basic shelves and connected ramps from the same lumber as the catio, with upgrades available for connected shelving and ramps. It also offers synthetic turf, but recommends buying a small piece first to check your cat's response. Turf shelving is not an automatic choice if your cat avoids that surface.

Attachment methods depend on the enclosure system. The kennel store says its shelves and accessories clamp to enclosure sides with bolts and nuts, and its outdoor ramp includes attachment hardware. Its preconfigured catios have connection holes for passageways, while items ordered individually do not have precut holes; confirm the installation requirements before adding parts.
