Outdoor catio

A yard catio can stand apart from your house and connect by a tunnel, or sit against the house with direct cat access. Choose a walk-in layout if you want human access, then compare its footprint, height, base requirements, and roof before buying or building.

Freestanding and walk-in describe different features

Freestanding describes where the enclosure sits; walk-in describes how you enter it. A catio can be both freestanding and walk-in, so these are not opposing choices. Humane World for Animals notes that freestanding models can use tunnel connectors, while Aivituvin offers walk-in models with a human access door.

Catio Spaces offers contrasting DIY layouts. Its Haven and Sanctuary designs are three-sided, while the Oasis & Cat Tunnel is a four-sided yard enclosure connected to the house by a tunnel. The Oasis includes space for human seating, making it an option if you want to spend time inside with your cat.

Catio Spaces says a cat door insert in a window, wall, or door can provide access from indoors. A detached enclosure without a connecting route is not the same arrangement, so settle the access plan before choosing the structure. Outdoor catios are not intended as full-time cat housing.

  • Choose the house connection along with the enclosure, not afterward.
  • If you may move, Humane World for Animals suggests considering a portable model.

Compare footprint, height, and usable space

Measure the yard footprint and compare height separately. Catbitats lists its standard Den enclosure at 46 inches deep by 46 inches long by 92 inches high, with 7 adjustable shelves and a full cedar floor. Its Petite Den enclosure has the same footprint but is 72 inches high, with a human entry door and 6 adjustable shelves.

Larger footprints and taller climbing structures serve different purposes. Catbitats lists the Cabana Series with a 92-inch square footprint, while the Oxford Tower Series provides twelve feet of vertical climbing. A tower is not a substitute for checking whether the floor layout accommodates your intended seating and cleaning access.

For more cats, compare usable shelves, floor space, and room for separate resting features rather than choosing by height alone. Humane World for Animals says younger or more rambunctious cats may use climbing structures and shelves at multiple levels. Catio Spaces suggests extra shelves and sheltering cubbies, and says an additional litter box can help reduce multi-cat strife.

  • Compare the enclosure dimensions with the space available for its connection.
  • Check the human doorway as well as the overall height.
  • Consider an expandable layout if your space needs may change.

Choose the frame, mesh, roof, and floor

Frame materials vary by supplier. Aivituvin uses solid wood and heavy-duty galvanized welded wire; CDE Animal Cages uses furniture-grade PVC or anodized aluminum frames with PVC-coated galvanized steel wire and stainless steel hardware. Habitat Haven uses galvanized steel mesh panels with a black powder-coated finish and a modular design that permits expansion.

For DIY construction, Catio Spaces uses wood framing and recommends 16-gauge fencing wire with 2-by-3-inch grid openings. It describes cedar as durable and resistant to shrinking or warping, but identifies standard wood-framing lumber as a more affordable alternative. If you have kittens, compare mesh options carefully: C&D Pet Products offers a smaller wire-grid option for them.

The enclosure needs a roof, not just fenced sides. Catio Spaces specifies wire or solid roofing and says full or partial clear polycarbonate admits light while providing a rain- and snow-protected spot. That weather cover does not establish snow-load capacity; Humane World for Animals advises choosing a structure that can withstand heavy snowfall where relevant.

Catio Spaces lists decks, porches, paved patios, grass, natural wood chips, pavers, carpet-covered exterior plywood, and cedar decking as floor options. It says the base must be level and escape-proof. Its guidance calls for securely fastening the catio to a deck, porch, or patio, or burying wire around the perimeter of a ground-level enclosure.

Choose a spot you can maintain

Start with the ground rather than the view. Humane World for Animals says many prefabricated catios require a level surface, such as concrete pavers or slabs, a deck, or a leveled lawn area. An uneven patch is not ready for one of those models without preparation.

Before settling on the spot, consider when it receives shade and whether you can see the enclosure from the house. Compare the proposed position with your window, wall, or door connection, including the tunnel route if needed. Catio Spaces says an additional run or tunnel is usually possible for its DIY catios, depending on location.

Plan human access for cleaning, not just cat access. Catio Spaces says a human-sized door or window can provide cleaning access; a walk-in door may suit you better than reaching through a window. Keep exit arrangements in mind: Humane World for Animals advises against covering a bedroom window unless another human-sized exit is available.

  • Allow room to reach and use the human access door.
  • Check the connection route before preparing the base.
  • Check requirements with your city and homeowners association before committing to the site.

Compare kits, DIY plans, and builders

Prices were checked in October 2026. Humane World for Animals puts prefabricated catios from a few hundred dollars to several thousand, while Catbitats lists kits starting at $425 and reaching about $6,200 for its largest walk-in builds. Compare the included floor, shelves, roof, and connection components rather than treating every kit as equivalent.

A modular kit suits a yard layout you may expand. Catbitats says its panels bolt together and allow tunnels or towers to be added later. This approach is less suitable if you want a layout the available panels cannot accommodate; confirm the configuration before ordering.

Catio Spaces sells DIY plans as PDF downloads for $39.95–$69.95, depending on size and type. That is the plan price, not a materials or completed-build quote. DIY is not the right route if you do not want to handle construction; a builder quote can instead address your chosen site and house connection.

The supplied sources do not establish a builder price range. Ask for a quote that identifies the frame, mesh, roof, floor, anchoring, and access arrangement so you can compare it with a kit. Catio Spaces advises checking with your municipality or homeowners association rather than assuming approval is unnecessary.

Questions people ask

Can a freestanding catio connect to a house?

Yes. Humane World for Animals notes that freestanding models can use tunnel connectors, and Catio Spaces offers the Oasis & Cat Tunnel as a yard enclosure connected to the house.

Can you put an outdoor catio on grass?

Catio Spaces lists grass as a floor option, but says the base must be level and escape-proof. For a catio directly on the ground, it advises burying wire around the perimeter.

Does an outdoor catio need a roof?

Yes. Catio Spaces says a wire or solid roof is required for full enclosure; clear polycarbonate can provide a sheltered spot, while snow-bearing capacity needs separate consideration.

Can cats live in an outdoor catio full-time?

Catio Spaces says outdoor catios are not intended as full-time housing. Plan the enclosure as access to outdoor space, with the house connection considered as part of the design.
