Buy a catio

Buying a catio

You can buy a catio from specialist kit makers, a warehouse club or a custom builder. Start with your available space and your cat’s route outside, then compare materials, assembly work and the delivered cost.

Where to buy a catio

Specialist makers offer different starting points: Aivituvin sells walk-in catios and smaller wheeled models, while Catbitats sells modular kits with tunnels, towers and bridges. Habitat Haven’s modular steel-panel enclosures allow later expansion, which may suit you if you want to add space over time.

Humane World for Animals puts prefabricated catio prices between a few hundred dollars and several thousand. For a custom-build comparison, Cat Topia lists The Cedar Castle, with a clear roof, shelves and wall entry, at $11,000.00. Prices were checked in October 2026; confirm the current listing and what the quoted price includes.

For the warehouse-club route, Warehouse Runner lists the Kitty City Outdoor Mega Catio Kit at Costco and reports a lowest verified warehouse price of $29.97 for members only. Its availability snapshot shows no stores in stock and only a few with low stock, so this is not a dependable nationwide purchase option. Check your warehouse before planning around that price.

For a larger enclosure designed around your home, Cat Topia designs and builds custom and predesigned catios and says it serves customers across the United States. The Catio Company designs and builds large catios across the Pacific Northwest using exterior-grade materials. A custom build is a different purchase from a kit: ask for a proposal that spells out the enclosure, access connection and installation work.

What to compare before buying

Compare the actual mesh and frame rather than treating all enclosures alike. Aivituvin uses solid wood and galvanized welded wire; C&D Pet Products uses solid redwood and galvanized steel wire, with a smaller wire-grid option for kittens. Warehouse Runner describes the Costco Kitty City enclosure as nylon mesh, so it is not a like-for-like substitute for a wood-and-wire structure.

Measure the footprint and decide how your cat will enter before choosing a size. Humane World for Animals describes three-sided models beside a window or pet door, and freestanding models connected by tunnels; many prefabricated catios also need a level surface. If you expect to move, consider a portable model rather than assuming a house-connected enclosure will be easy to relocate.

Read installation instructions and watch assembly videos before ordering: prefabricated does not mean assembled. Humane World for Animals says some vendors can connect buyers with an installation expert. Check shipping charges, delivery arrangements and whether installation is included before comparing totals.

  • Mesh: ask for opening size and wire gauge; check kitten suitability.
  • Roof: confirm what is included and, in snowy regions, its snow-load suitability.
  • Size: allow for the access connection as well as the enclosure.
  • Assembly: check the required tools and help before buying.
  • Placement: check zoning and fire-safety rules with your city; do not assume a bedroom window can be covered.
